Raise Your Glass to the…405?

Every Angeleno is an automatic member of a special club called “LA Traffic is Worse Than A Bad Haircut”. Granted, the hour drive from the beach cities to Hollywood is a great time to try out your new iTunes library. All 582 songs. And sure, sitting in the parking lot on the 405 gives us time to catch up with friends and family at home. Or on the freeway behind us.

Why not celebrate our shared misery instead of complaining about it? These adorable shot glasses by Sisters of Los Angeles (SOLA Ltd.) do just that, giving shout-outs to the 5, the 10, the 101, and the 405. Raise a glass with the freeway you hate the most, and cheers!

Southwest Flavor

Here at Firefly, we are loving the Southwest inspired trends currently in style. This Pendleton Chimayo throw is no exception – it’s the perfect addition of Arizona flavor to any room! I’m foreseeing lots of fall movie nights wrapped up in this baby… and might I add that it’s almost cold outside this morning.  Almost.

Let’s fly a kite!

This past weekend whilst visiting our fabulous Aunt Patsy, Mia repeatedly reminded us that she wanted to fly a kite.  We’ve been reading a lot of summertime stories lately and most seem to feature a kite.  Naturally she wanted in on the action.  Kites always seem impossible to find when you are looking for them on a whim, but that didn’t stop us from searching a 25 mile radius only to come up empty handed.  My husband declared he would just make one.  At first I was a naysayer, but remembered making kites in school as a child.  Could they still be made?  Were newspapers still in print?

Of course we all heckled our industrious crafter.

Soon the heckling turned to awe.

Look!  Hurray for Daddy!

The kite was soaring.  I loved it!  It was a bit short lived but every bit worth it especially since I caught it all on film.  The sun set and it was time to wash the sand from our feet, pack up our treasures and head on home.  What a fun weekend we had.

Cheers!

Olympic Essentials

I doubt this is a newsflash for anyone out there, but the Summer Olympics are here!  Most of you have probably caught at least a little of the coverage, from opening ceremonies to newsworthy victories.  If you’re like me, you vow to watch as much as possible (even the unusual sports)…and then wind up only watching diving and gymnastics.  After all, who can say no to speedos and sparkly costumes?

Whatever country you pledge allegiance to, there is much more excitement to come in the next week and a half – especially if you’re lucky enough to be on your way to London to see the games in person.  To make the trip ahead easier, we’ve gathered some essential Olympic items at Firefly for you.  Safe travels!

First thing’s first – the plane trip to London!  Make sure your passport is protected for the long trip to London town with Barbara Wiggins’ classic and durable passport protector.  Then, why not relax on your long flight by getting into the spirit of the games?  Try perusing the The Olympic Games Through a Lens. It contains 230 photos from Getty Images of both iconic and unusual athletes, moments, and sports.  For the superstitious fan, we suggest using BlueQ’s “Knock on Wood” bag for small personal items – you can’t be too cautious when a gold medal’s in the balance!

Now you’ve landed in London Town, and are ready to go find your favorite events! You might be a tourist, but who says you need to look the part? The voyager compass necklace helps you get your bearings without resorting to a cumbersome map, so you’ll never miss a meet! Show off your American Olympic pride while spectating in a classy and discreet way with Kinetix’s USA tank top (looks even better on women!). When the night gets chilly, channeling your Usain Bolt has never been easier than when wearing La La Land’s printed cardigan – you’ll be cheering faster than a cheetah!

London gets hot in the summer, and nothing is worse than a cold beverage warming up. Stay hydrated (& keep your liquids cool) with a S’well bottle that’s functional as well as stylin’. Now, if you must sniffle during an equestrian event, you should use a cotton hanky – remember, our English cousins are quite proper! Try these three soft cotton handkerchiefs from Izola. Throughout your time at the Games, you’ll probably meet buckets of world travelers. Keep track of these interesting new friends from around the globe with this journal.

The games are over – time to celebrate. Don’t forget to congratulate your favorite athlete!  Feeling a little jealous of their victory?  Grab one of these gold medal bottle openers, and you’ll feel like a winner every time you help a friend out opening their bottle!

Bunny Farm!

Look!  It’s the cutest bunny farm ever!  I have been patiently waiting almost a year to share these pictures.   Now that the Easter Bunny is on his way, the timing seems just right.

Last summer, while visiting Mia’s grandparents in Denmark, we went to an old farmhouse that was giving a lecture on… well, who am I kidding, I didn’t understand a word, but the farmer seemed happy enough to share every detail.  I got a few winks and eye rolls from Farfar (Grandpa) and I sensed that the lecture was 45 minutes longer than need be.

This particular farm only raises pure bred animals and treats them with the highest level of integrity.  Obviously, that’s what the sign says:

Everything was amazing here from all the old tools hanging on the walls to old farm tables in the barn with random loaves of fresh baked bread sitting on benches.  Mia had so much fun riding this tractor and enjoying all the animals.  And I only wanted to take home two baby goats and four chickens.

But seriously, best of all, BUNNIES!  Happy Easter to All!

Where the Bison Roam

It’s been so warm these days that I have been reminiscing about the fun times I had this summer, so I wanted to share some of the adventures I had.  Each year, about a dozen friends head to Montana for our annual summer vacay.  After an arduous trip to Costco where literally three carloads of food is packed in, we head Northeast to the middle of nowhere.  After we’ve deliberated where we’re all sleeping, we head on out to the dock and remain stationed there until it’s time to head home.  Some read.  Others waterski.  My brother always drives the boat.  Everyone drinks Fat Tire.

Options include kayaking, biking, hiking, fly fishing, swimming, cooking, star gazing and always an occasional game of Scattergories.  We look forward to the trip and each year brings subtle differences (now we have child in tow) which make each year unique.  I highly recommend the  Hiawatha Trail where you bike (literally coast) down an old railway for pretty much 3 hours.  If you ever have an opportunity to do this in your lifetime, do NOT pass this up.  This summer’s highlight was a brief trip to see bison.  I had heard that a neighbor (and by neighbor, I mean a 40 minute drive) had a small herd, and I just insisted that I go see for myself.  I mean, how often does one see bison?  While our trip was brief and the bison were, in fact, roaming right out of our range for the night, I was overwhelmed by their majestic stature.  They seemed unbelievably timid yet strong, like warrior strong, ultimately making them the most human of animals I relate to.  It was an honor to be in their presence.  While it was also a trip where we pretty much parked the car, snapped a few photos and headed back to the cabin, this animal had a profound affect on me.

Here we are having a staring contest.  I was imparting my infinite wisdom upon him while he was looking at me thinking he could probably take me out in one fell swoop.  The American Prairie Foundation is making huge strides in returning our North American native prairies back to their original habitat.  How cool would it be to go on a safari in the United States?  One day this may be possible.

Have you been to Oscar’s yet?

Have you been to Oscar’s yet?  I found it totally enchanting.  I may have happened to be there on a good night because we were seated right away in their wine room which I highly recommend requesting if you have a large group.  The customer service was beyond exceptional.  I got the feeling that the staff liked to be a part of this local joint.  The GM was so knowledgeable, friendly and warm that if my hands were cold I would have rubbed them together and held them out towards him to bask in the bonfire glow.  I almost called the owner mid dinner to congratulate him on his success.  The decor – forget about it.  I went home and started packing because I was ready to move in.  Modern industrial perfection.  I actually asked if I could buy the table we were seated at because they are planning to replace it with something even better.  Great wine.  Great fish tacos.  I recommend the shrimp.  Good atmosphere led to great conversation.  I look forward to returning.
